Considering Bangs? Read Our Tips First!

Whether it’s your signature styleTips for Bangs or a memory you’d like to forget, most of us have had bangs at some point. Bangs offer many different styles and can give you a new look without getting an all-over cut. If you’re considering bangs, read our tips first to help find the best bangs just for you:

  1. Long, Sideswept Bangs: This look is versatile, feminine and can be worn on any hair length, type or texture. You can wear them straight or let them air dry to their natural curl or wave to be swept to the side and blended in with the rest of your hair. This look is also easy to grow out, so it doesn’t require as much commitment or maintenance. To style: If they’re long enough, tuck bangs behind your ear and let air dry, encouraging hair to lay to the side. If not, comb styling cream (or gel for curly hair) through wet bangs, and when blow drying, direct air flow down from the roots.
  2. Blunt Eyebrow-Length Bangs: This look is best for thick or straight hair, to give you a more “mod” look, and can also make oval faces appear thinner. If you’re looking for a style that will draw attention to your eyes, this is the cut to get. This blunt style requires regular trimming and maintenance. Avoid if you have: thin hair – this style will appear wispy, not blunt; cowlicks in your crown area – these will cause unwanted separation. To style: apply a styling cream to wet bangs, blow dry using a vented brush, and polish the look with a flat iron in an arc-like motion to help ends lay flat.
  3. Long, Piecey Bangs: This look can work on all face shapes, especially if you prefer a messy, imperfect, “bedhead” style. Also works great on hair with natural body as thin bangs will fall flat. To style: Blow dry roughly until your hair is about halfway dry, then let your bangs air dry, promoting natural texture and messiness. Be sure to work your fingers into them to give them some separation. Tame any unwanted flyaways with a bit of styling cream and set with hairspray.
  4. Long, Face-Framing Bangs: This look is especially flattering to oval and round faces because the bangs hit the corners of your eyes to highlight your cheekbones. Other bang styles can be shaped into this look for an easy change, or if you’re trying to grow them out. To style: use a small comb or teasing brush while blow drying to pull the hair away from the face, adding volume. Then with the tail end of your comb/brush, part your bangs down the middle and if needed, smooth the ends with a flat iron.
  5. Short Bangs: This look can slim a round face and also make a small forehead appear longer. This style works great with a pixie cut. To style: Easy – let them air dry, then create some texture with a bit of pomade. Finish by pushing bangs to the side for a fresh, modern style.

Extra Credit:

  • Don’t cut your bangs yourself (unless you’re a professional).
  • Do take a picture of bangs you like with you when you’re ready for the cut.
  • Don’t just follow the trends; go for what works with your hair and routine.
  • Do be open to other bang styles if your hairstylist suggests an alternative and more flattering style for your specific hair texture.
  • Do try clip-in bangs if you’re interested in the look but not ready to commit.
