Hormonal changes in our body can cause our skin’s oil glands (sebaceous glands) to produce excess lubricant (sebum) in the hair follicle. The hair, sebum, and cells that fill the narrow follicle may produce a plug which prevents sebum from reaching the surface of the skin through the pore.
Propionibacterium acnes (P.acnes) normally live on the skin’s surface. The excess sebum trapped in the pore provides a ready food source for the P.acnes bacteria. The bacteria colonies reproduce rapidly.
Bacteria in the follicle attract white blood cells that cause inflammation. Inflammation is marked by four signs: swelling, redness, heat, and pain. The end result is what we commonly refer to as a pimple or an acne blemish.

Topical lotions and gels used to treat mild to moderate acne commonly contain benzyl peroxide to kill the P.acnes bacteria. The active ingredient benzyl peroxide can leave the skin irritated, dry and itchy and uncomfortable. Using these topical ointments may also bleach or discolour towels, facecloths, bedding and clothing.

Non-ultra violet light in the 400-430 nanometer (nm) range is a highly effective tool for eliminating the P.acnes bacteria naturally without costly side effects. Blue light energy has a phototoxic effect on the P.acnes bacteria which means that when exposed to the blue light energy within the 400-430nm range, the bacteria self destructs effectively removing the cause of an inflammatory response.
